Video Title: how to play “You Can’t Always Get What You Want “on guitar by The Rolling Stones | guitar lesson
[Applause] [Applause] [Applause] All right so you can’t always get what you want by the stones this is from let it bleeds released in 1969 and it’s just one of their biggest songs right and a lot of people at the time thought this was kind of their answer to the Beatles
Hey Jude because you know back in the day John Lennon had always said that the stones had sort of copied the Beatles anyways they’ll burn in the London bought choir for this one sixty voices in that choir and that wasn’t enough so they double tracked it okay so one
Hundred twenty voices on that recording and the drums Charlie never played drums on this Jimmy Miller that producer played drums and apparently the story goes that Jimmy was like Charlie was struggling with the drums it was the feel and Jimmy Miller was like no no do
It like this right so Charlie said well why don’t you just play and got up and left and Jimmy Miller played drums on this session right anyways the other thing about this is the tuning everybody says it’s an open e but I could not find one article like
The legitimate source saying it was in open e with a cable with the eighth fret right so if anybody has an article you even want to post it in the comments below I would love to see that because I think he recorded in open G because he
Plays an open G all the time but I could be I could be wrong I really don’t know but I’m just going off the videos that I’ve seen and he’s always plays at an open G ok so we’re an open G right tuning down there and we capo on the
Fifth fret alright and in my little performance thing I did a little bit of open E as well I brought a guitar in an opening just to show you and I will bring that out in a second to show you the difference well mostly the similarities between you know open G
With a capo on five and open E with a capo on eight alright but for now let’s get into it so we’re gonna start like this There’s about four different patterns that you need to learn if you want it to sound like the record now we all know Keith never plays anything the same twice ever and probably the only time he played it like it is on the record is that take in the studio right because
He just doesn’t roll like that he’s he just plays by feel but I’m gonna try and show you exactly what he’s doing there as best as I can because I you know such an iconic song you want to play it like it is on the record okay so we’ve got um
D 2 B 1 and E 2 and we just gotta pull it off and right away go to G 2 right that’s the very beginning when that choir stops singing and then we’re gonna go Like that right but with the whole court We we fret this again and then we got the slick so we’re gonna have em run the D string open G and go down low go to the a string right okay that’s lick number one and then look number two is this Identical to lick number one except the ending [Applause] Okay so instead of going Gonna go Rest we extend it and hammer-on and then pull off at Sheetz it’s a strong Okay that’s what number two now the next the third time through we’re gonna go back to lick number one but instead of going gonna go we go up right to the B string and into semantics he had to be the G and the e doesn’t really matter right
Clients were going up and got down to that based on so far we’ve got [Applause] Last one The last one exactly the second one except instead of going We’re just gonna go right don’t do that we’re gonna go Okay so instead of over explaining everything let’s just play it real slow [Applause] [Applause] okay then the singing starts okay and the first one is And that one’s gonna repeat almost constantly throughout the rest of the song right so The second one Goes back to that And from there on in it’s just gonna be Okay that’s pretty well go throughout the rest of the song again let’s just play it slow and sort of get it in your head [Applause] Okay now we get into the course you can’t always get what you want right and at that same pattern over and over Okay until you get to There We were just going to bar on the second track play from the a-string over hammering on the second fret of the d-string Right and then we’re into the course and the chorus the rhythm changes Okay so dan dan dan dan dan right that’s the course and then And then it’s just that pattern over and over and of course it’s Keith man he’s always doing other stuff too right but you know when you get to get to that part of the song do what you want but as far as the beginning of it’s so iconic
That I think you know it’s worth your while to get all the nuances of that it’ll just make it sound that much more authentic right now okay so let’s play it slow one more time and then I’ll bring out my openiy guitar and show you how to play in that tune Oh [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Okay and that’s it now just give me a second I’ll grab my open heat guitar Okay so in open e with a capo on the eighth fret if you play first five strings you’re gonna get a C G C and E and a G okay and if you’re in open G with a cape with the fifth fret if you play the last five string so from the a
String down you’re going to get the exact same notes okay so that is identical to open G from the fifth string down right so it’s the same thing all you’re getting in open E is you don’t need to worry about muting the low E string right and you get that extra
C-note up top there and where your fingers are hear it open G all you got to do pick them up and move them down this way one string and you play the exact same Okay and that’s really the only difference in the tuning and if you’re playing on the thicker strings you know you’re going to get a bit fatter a bit more of a fatter sound than if you’re playing on you know the upper strings in open G with a k-put v right okay but to
All intensive purposes it’s identical just move everything down one string anyways that’s it for this one I hope you get something out of it I hope you enjoy playing it make sure you go to my website and yeah I’ve got the whole thing is so organized they’re like I’ve
Got drop-down menus and all kinds of stuff going on there so make sure you check that out and thanks for watching and we’ll talk to you next time you

Here’s a film from 69 confirming what you say. https://youtu.be/r9KxrKUc5yI?feature=shared
Im curious as to why you always play the lick after the barred A chord a beat early? Just listened to the record and its not like that.
for all guitarists struggling out there with the timing of the riff after the barre chord…..andy doesn't do it with exactly the right timing and comes in a bit early in the tutorial (he's just being 'shut up and play'.
thanks so much for the lesson
Very good instruction
awesome tutorial. I just watched them live and Keith does a walk down 4th string 7th fret to the 9th fret 5th string-then to 7th fret 5th string then last ending with open 5th string. Then you are right back into your chord progression again just like your 3 different ways of picking in between your chord progressions. But I saw Keith loves those chunky run-downs different from Ronny Wood. I'm sure there are more ways that they both trade off on. But I got it from them live 1990. I don't want to put youtube address here, because it will bring up the vid here. But if you do not believe me. check for yourself. it's a live show 1990 and it is unmistakable that they hardly play the rhythm at all. Keith and Ron both do solo's through most of it. little short riffs to accent. But you do the correct rhythm awesomely. you never mess up a rhthym. you are always Aces on perfection. Great job. if there is a cover to learn I go straight to you. you know them all to perfection. You have one of the best tuned ears I have heard & seen on Youtube. Love the Shut Up & Play Vids
This is an excellent tutorial. As for which tuning Keith used on the album version, I don’t think in there can be much question that he used open-E. If you listen carefully, you can clearly hear the C at the top of the C chord. If he had been in open-G capo’d the 5th fret, this would be a G at the top of the chord, unless he played that C with his pinky up at the 10th fret, which is awkward and very un-Keith. So he has to be in open-E. All that said, he plays it live in open-G, so that’s perfectly authentic as well, just a little different sounding than the album version.
If you say it's played in open G with a capo on the 5th fret Andy, then it's played in open G with a capo on the 5th fret. I know the detail you go into with your lessons, and I have 💯% faith in your judgement!! 🤭🙂
You the man!
Best version on YouTube
Thank you!
Fab 4 self destructed, george & ringo was only 2 normal @ no fault.
5:00 Great observation that "Keith doesn't fret E2 .." this would lead one to believe he has migrated from open G (DGDGBD) to to open G6 tuning (DGDGBE) (or XGDGBE in this song) . Imagine playing the same song a couple hundred times a year for 50+ years He can play it many different ways in order not to get bored with it. Standard, open E, Open G, open G6… Pick your fav! I like the one that sounds the best myself 🙂. THANKS so much for all the great tutorials Shutup and Play – Guitar Tutorials.
way better that Hey Jude…I hated that song
Playing it in open G makes it just sound so grand. Keef is a genius and making simple shit sound so great haha
Best lesson on this iconic Stones anthem by a country mile.So brilliant in his vocal and visual teaching. Finally after years of trying to get this sound like the original I have just about mastered it.Thanks so much Andy. Where can I find your website, please?
Open G versus Open E : There is a documentary on youtube regarding the recording and production of the Let It Bleed sessions I had listened to a while back. The person interviewed who said he was present during recordings stated that the studio version of the Acoustic track on You Can't Always Get What You Want was done in E Tuning. He followed this statement adding however, that he noticed that Keith had always played live using G Tuning. My guess would be this is accurate given Gimme Shelter was written in E Tuning as were other previous compositions. I have found using the G tuning, I was able to come up with some guitar voicings to replicate the Piano driven bridge section where there is no acoustic and the bass walks from A unto G before returning to the main structure. Hope this info may be useful.
Bridge?
Excellent tutorial!
But… I have searched YouTube for hours, and nobody seems to be able (or to want) to explain the bridge part, there are some tricky chords at that point!
You did not explain the instrumental interlude and thats a shame
Came across this today, great job! Love the way you show the subtleties, very cool. Any chance you could shed some light on the middle eight? I've been playing this one for a while, in open G, capo on the 5th like you show, but I just can't seem to "hear" exactly what is happening there in the middle section. I also watched your lesson on Wild Horses, equally great. Thanks a lot!
Good job but does anyone other than Keith know how he plays it. Lol
im getting a completely different sound if i do that
Do you live in So Cal? I used to sing in bands n this was my signature song. Made countless ppl be moved to tears as it had done in college when I first heard it.. beautiful tutorial.
HI! I am new to your channel.
Would you be so kind as to tell me what model of Taylor guitar you are playing? A greeting from Spain.
Andy, Hope your feeling better. I love just listening to you play. You put in so much detail when you play. Thank you !
When I play this in open-E with a capo at 8 (OK, open-D with capo at 10, but whatever) I swear I can hear that high C (C5) that he mentions at 14:35 (and said by Michael M. in a previous post) – which leads me to believe this is what was played on the album rather than open-G.
But bottom line: Thanks for this and a million other pieces I've learned from this guy.

This is the iconic part but I'd really like to play the other guitar part. Do you have a video on that?
Another great song & another great lesson 🙂 PS…I bought the tab.
This is definitely the best lesson out there for this song. Love it Andy.
Sounds SO PURE – almost sounds like horns are in accompany as well

Not 100% sure what's right but open E sounds best to me after playing both ways. Loving you lessons though mate!
I know that Keith Richard really liked playing in open G, and I think I remember having read somewhere that he played open D way back, but outside of this post I have never read anything about Keith Richard ever playing open E. Not saying that he never did, just that I'm not familiar with any information that would lead me to think that he had . . . I'm going with open G.
Whatever you’re using to record audio, it’s amazing.
Thanks for all the great lessons. I would love to see your take on playing “Street Fighting Man” in open D.
Can you make a jumping jack flash lesson? There's a lot controversial about de album tunning and riff. I like de open E tunning but I don't know…something don't match for me.
I’d have to say open E and capo at the 8th fret is closer to the record because of the high C you hear when he’s strumming it. Your way, in open G, the highest note you hear is G when strumming. Listen to the original recording—there’s the high C at the 8th fret in the background.
Love this channel Not a big player, just a hack, but I love this channel
Do you happen to know the four or five chords in the "interlude" portion of the song??
That's Awesome.Thank you..thank you..thank you!
I think it's better to play in open G, for a simple reason. your strings can break easily if you play in open E, especially if you have old strings.
The open E version on the 8th fret sounds more like the album to me . Johnny G
What tuning is this on? I’m trying to learn this song but my guitar sounds different from yours. Please help
Thank you for showing the open E tuning as well. I’ve been playing jumping Jack flash in open E so it’s nice to go back-and-forth between these two songs.
Fantastic! I think you’re the best teacher on YouTube
God the timing of the intro is killing me. Sometimes the little fill kicks off on the and of 3 and sometimes it's right on the 4.
I'm just trying to find the bridge.
