Video Title: Led Zeppelin “Going to California” Guitar Lesson – PT. 2-3
Hey everyone and welcome back to surf guitar lessons today I’m very excited to share with you section number two of my three part series on going to California by Led Zeppelin now this is one of my song requests of the month so if you have a song that you would like me to
Teach next definitely click through the link in the description and put in your request today let’s get started on your lesson okay a close look at the guitar and also my right hand we’re getting started right where we left off in section 1 building some instrumental fills for our
Verses the first one I’m gonna show you sounds like this real slow okay so we’re going to break this part up into three sections section one two three okay in section one of that finger-picking pattern we’re going to start off playing both of our east rings together remember both of these strings
Are tuned to D then we’re playing the B string with the middle finger and then the D string with the thumb so that is section 1 now section 2 starts on the high E string low string B string D string we need to do that twice
You combine that with section 1 and we have now for section three basically the same pattern but my first finger came off of the east rain that’s going to be high e-string low string B string D string okay now let’s put parts one through three together for your first instrumental fill okay
Onto Phil number two this one’s going to borrow a little bit more of the mandolin melody it’s going to sound like this okay so we’re also going to break this part up into three sections section 1 section 2 section 3 okay so this section is going to begin
With our ring finger on the fifth fret of the b-string we’re going to slide up to the 7th fret as we strike the low E string after you’ve done that strike the D string with the thumb so section one now on to section two there I played the B string the low E
String back to the B string to the D string put those two parts together we had and now we’re on to Section three so that began with my B string and my low E string together then the D string and the B string that’s followed by a great little hammer
On like the second fret g string hammered up to the fourth fret of the g string I tend to strike that with my index fingers as my middle finger takes the B string just like that so I’m striking the beanie the D string the B string then the G
Hammer on and then the B string with the middle finger I like to get a little bit of a snap there so I’m going to pluck a little harder on that first finger then maybe I would on some of the other strings because it’s nice to put emphasis here and there
Let’s put sections one through three together you now the second time around I’m going to stay on the decor did not feature the hammer on lick and to stick with this pattern here ok so now we have two instrumental fills to sprinkle across our verses for number one back to the verse
Door number two now we’re ready to get into our instrumental bridge it’s going to sound like this you okay so this section is going to start off in a position that’s kind like a D minor D minor nine so my first fingers on the 3rd fret of
The high E string my pinky is on the 5th fret of the B string and my ring finger is on the 5th fret of the g string very very mystical spooky sounding chord and we’re going to utilize the same finger-picking pattern that we had put into our instrumental fill number one
It’s going to sound like this so it starts off with our two e strings harmonized then we have the B string followed by the d-string so these are in unison B string then the D string after that you separate the 2d strings so we have double D D e/b d you
Okay up next we have a little B minor pull off section it sounds like this real slow okay so that begins in the B minor shape my first finger is on the 2nd fret of the a and my third finger is on the 3rd
Fret of the B my middle finger is on the high E string 2nd fret this is where I’m going to end up but at first my ring finger needs to be down one string to perform a pull off that sounds going to be harmonized with
The bass note here on the a string so I’m going to pluck the a and the hi you string together as I pull off from three to two next after I perform that pull off I’m going to strike the D string as my third finger goes up to the B string third
Fret just to wait there just like that after that I strike the high E string again and then the a string you then the B string with the middle finger then finally the d-string to finish up that part a little bit complicated it’s gonna take some time all right purchase with a lot
Of patience all right and now finally ready to go in to the major resolution okay so in this instrumental bridge so far we have you now the major resolution will sound like this one more time real slow okay breaking that up into a few sections the first section will sound like this
So there I’ve read it a shape that looks exactly like a traditional D chord when we’re in standard tuning but that chord with the D string tuned down a whole step creates a su scored because we have an e where the third would have been
All right there on the high E string so we’re gonna start off striking the b-string high e-string and low e-string together then put your pinky up on the fourth fret that creates a D major chord as you strike the D string you’re going to do the same thing here little claw is going
To grab the B string and the high E string as you go up into the major chord and grab the D string there so the D string B string and high E string starts off with just the low E string B string and high E string on the suits chord
Then the D string into the major then I’m going to play E string double treble strings and then the D string that’s followed by a little lick okay so that little major lick is going to begin with a second fret slide up to the third fret of the b-string when I do
That as my low string my east ring rings out so those are in unison then I’ll strike the D string with my thumb as my ring finger stretches for the fifth fret high e-string I’ll pluck that with my ring finger after that I need to strike the low e-string
Then the fourth fret of the high E string that’s followed by the d-string you Oh now I could even play the B string and the high E string together during some of the slick okay so now we’ll be very rich very robust it would be perfect for getting
Us way up into this instrumental interlude way up here in the 14th fret position frettin ourselves a D major chord shape so that’s 1415 with the ring finger and 14 on the high E string right just like that we keep my thumb where it belongs behind the deck
Right before going back into my next verse so there I’m plucking the low E string the g string the B string and the high E string I’m going to keep it nice and simple because I’ve had some very complicated picking lines throughout the composition so far this will give the
Audience a chance to kind of recoup then you’re ready to build it back up again into the verse r21 thanks so much for checking out section 2 of my lesson on going to California by Led Zeppelin still one more section together so check back later in the week for the remainder of
This lesson in the meantime I got plenty more coming up you keep checking back please subscribe please share this is Robin Swift guitar lessons in Philadelphia saying happy picking

Thanks to my supporters for making this lesson possible! You can find your complimentary tablature at: https://goo.gl/41UP2T
Compared to all of the other YT videos out in here this one was ultimately the easiest to digest thank you
Thanks for this video!
If you don't have a good foundation for right hand technique, this beautiful song would be out of reach.
👍👍❤️❤️🎸Really enjoying this lesson. It’s quite hard for me as I’m not used to fingerpicking and I only have about 3 1/2 years experiences guitar – so just wanted to comment that having the tabs up on the screen makes a huge difference because I can pause the video and look at them for extended periods of time -without those tabs on the screen it would be very difficult so thank you for doing that. Slowly learning this and decided to stick with it because I want to get out of my comfort zone and try something that’s hard for me… and also because the Melody is just so incredibly beautiful
Excellent tutorial
Thank you for he lesson, love this song
Added some spice(: thanks!
Great lesson but I wish you wouldn't wear a sweater that makes the tab blend in to it.
Sassy pants Friday play that
Great video! Thank you very much!
I know this is an old lesson, but I just bucked up the courage to tackle this and wanted to comment. The clear and concise way you break down all of the steps for this lesson really helped. I feel this is an outstanding lesson. Thanks!
Bravo Sir……thank you for your time and generosity. I have always wanted to play this song and now I can thanks to you.
Thank you , thank you , thank you for this !
way too many commercials dude
Dude your videos for Going to California are great! It took me one day to get part 1 and 2 down, because of how well you break it down. I sub'd to your channel and look forward to seeing more of your content!
you did an excellent job blending the mandolin and guitar parts together… consider the original recordings sounded so busy with multiple layers of instruments going at once. props for that, and a great video my man… only complaint- why did you have to pick white text to go over top of such a light color hahaha my blind ass is struggling over here lmao
Hi. I've been playing guitar (non professionally) for 20+ years. No finger style skills to speak of. I've been working on this song for the last week and progress is very slow and I'm wondering if I might have a learning disability (kinda joking) but this is very hard for me. From your teaching experience, about how long should it take to learn this entire song? Any help much appreciated.
Great video, very helpful. What gauge strings do you use?
6:05
a seuss chord? really?
For those wondering, like me, where the tabs are for the Dmag chord at the end are, you can see them in the review section of the next video.
THANK YOU!!!!
This is a great lesson, I love the in-video tabs…makes it really easy to follow along. Thanks for the variations too, they spice the song up for sure.
god that's a beautiful sweater.
Hey swiftlesson, im with mojo21136, where's part 3? hahaha i need closure!
Where's part 3?

Can you do a lesson on nothing else matters by Metallica?
