Video Title: I Used to Love Her by Guns N Roses | Easy Guitar
So [Applause] [Applause] i used to love her But i had to kill her i used to love her i can’t still hear her complain Hey how you doing justin here today we are checking out i used to love her by guns and roses man this one brings back a lot of memories playing this around campfire as a teenager not that it looks like it now but i used to have real long
Hair i used to think i was axel rose and wear leather pants and cowboy boots the whole thing it was pretty hilarious back in tasmania i’m sure it gave quite a few people a giggle but this was one of those songs that was actually a really really great one for me when i
Was learning guitar because it gave me a chance to use a few cool little chord tricks so a real beginner can just handle it using a d a and g chord for the whole song lots of fun i remember learning a real lot from this song not
Just using the chord ornaments that you can get away with on the d chord but how to incorporate the 12 bar shuffle riff into chord playing particularly acoustic guitar now the original recording i think slash is playing it slightly differently i will talk a little bit about that as well uh but incorporating
That this idea It’s just something that can really break out in this sort of song from being just like straight chords and strumming it’s not particularly difficult to do either which is great i’m not going to be covering slash’s awesome lead guitar solos in this particular lesson but i’m very tempted i
Just when i was listening to it just now i was thinking this would be a great solo for me to transcribe to a lesson on and explain what’s going on how he’s targeting the chord tones and that kind of thing it could be kind of interesting
So if you’re at the point where you’d be interested in learning that solo let me know in the comments while you’re down there really appreciate you hitting that subscribe button and slap me a like as well so let’s get stuck in check out this song so the basic chords you need are
D i used to a chord now a chord here if you’re a real beginner you can be using that three finger version so you could definitely use i used to love a g but i had to kill you can use those chords those regular grips you remember
If you’re using your anchor finger there the g chord you can be using just second and third fingers you could be using third and fourth fingers you could be using the big rock g here any of those g chords are going to work well in this
One so it’s completely up to you where you’re at and what sounds good because it gets to the point where you can do all of them you’ve got to choose which is the one you like the sound of that’s just a personal decision right the a chord
I would tend to go for using the a mini bar so just using your first finger there making sure the thinnest string is muted so you’re lifting your kind of the lower knuckle there it’s just lifting away from the fretboard enough so the thinnest string is muted you don’t want
This sound an a6 chord it doesn’t really fit in that song so uh the reason i prefer using that one is because it’s good for doing the rock and roll thing or the sus chord or even combining them if you want to get a bit fancy pants but the first the
Most important part would be i used to love her But i had to acorn i used to acorn then i [Applause] Then what you want to be doing once you’ve got the chords down he’s adding in old faithful down down up up down down down up up down it should be a strumming pattern that you’re familiar with if you’re not familiar with it you need to get
Familiar with it right this is the most common strumming pattern that there ever was it’s used all the time you want to get it so you don’t have to think about it your hand keeps moving consistently all the time that’s the trick so even though it’s going down down up
Up down down down up up down if i move my hand away the hand is still just moving dead consistent wouldn’t matter if i was doing this drumming pattern okay the hand motion is the same all the time down down up up down down down up up down sometimes i’m putting an extra
Strum in there and the and after four and two and four and one and two doesn’t matter if the hand keeps going you can leave some out it doesn’t really matter people aren’t going to feel it’s kind of weird you can add in a lot more Doesn’t matter it’s the consistent of the consistency of the hand that makes the difference there on the groove and once you’ve got the groove down once you can do the strumming pattern i definitely recommend playing along with the original recording and trying to absorb the time feel absorb the vibe not
Just doing it on your own doing it playing it with the original recording you’ll suck up some of the original vibe okay because the way music seems to work is that it’s not just like the mathematical one two and the m4 there’s something about the the feeling that we put into the music
That i think you can absorb by planner along so even though this is a simple song it’s a really really good one to play along with the original recording if you’re struggling with your strumming the tip would be to practice with the muted strumming just like this and practice that along with the
Original recording okay making sure that you can lock it what we call locking in so you’re playing exactly in time with it if you take away the chords you you that part of the the stress has gone and you can just really think about the rhythm it’s a very powerful tool that
One i definitely urge any of you that are struggling with your strongly to get into doing that regularly because it’s yeah very good so once you can do the chords and you can do the strumming you can play pretty much the whole song you should be able
To play along that would be one of the guitar parts on the record fantastic off you go if you’re playing on your own or you’re jamming with somebody else and they’re playing those you know the basic strumming it could be really cool to have some other things to do some other
Things to explore harmonically let’s start with the common ornaments we’ve got here a d chord adding little finger down on the third fret the thinnest string to d sus4 you can also lift off your second finger there to get a d sus2 it’s a nice one for the a chord the ornament
Is probably the third finger down in the third fret of the second string it’s an a sus4 on the g chord you haven’t got a lot of ornaments that you can use other than the rock and roll one and i’m assuming that you’re playing g without your first finger which is uh
The version i’d recommend no matter whichever one you want to do i don’t think you want to had that i think it just makes it all a bit muddy but if we just look at using those ornaments first of all [Applause] Do Now the thing with ornaments when you first learn them it’s very easy to go a bit overboard and put them in too often and it doesn’t sound good when you do it’s like adding too much spice to a dish it kind of ruins it so i think it’s a good idea to practice
Adding in lots so that they feel comfortable under your fingers but you definitely you don’t need to be using them a whole lot in this song maybe just like a bit on the d would already add interest just adding a sus4 so just saying with a d a g a maybe
That maybe on the a [Applause] That kind of thing it doesn’t need to be a whole lot again great way of understanding this is to listen to recordings that you love so listen to the original recording by guns and roses see if you can hear where the ornaments are and how they’re used so that’ll give
You an idea of kind of what’s a an appropriate amount for the music that you like to make it’s a good idea so let’s check out the rock and roll thing because this is a lot of fun any of you doing my beginners course will encounter this kind of rock and
Roll shuffle thing and we learn on the a the d and the e like a 12 bar blues now this song’s in the key of d so we’re not going to use the e chord here’s a regular d chord here’s the rock and roll pattern that you’d learn for the d
Now this is adding the third finger down here in the fourth fret of the third string one and two and three and four and instead of the two and and the four end but what could work real well with the d chord two three four one two three four so
We’re adding the second the sorry the little finger down on the fourth fret the third string on beats two and four one two three four I just think it’s a really cool effect it might be a little bit stretchy for some of you to use the the little finger there a good kind of chi if you find that a bit awkward is to use first and second fingers here mute the thinnest string
Then you can use your third finger i think it’s better it’s a nicer thing if you can get the whole chord in and then just teach your little finger to go down and have that as an optional note i think it’s a good thing not just in this song but lots of
Other songs you can use that as an ornament that works pretty good on the a chord actually there’s the standard thing third finger is going down in the fourth fret of the fourth string if you’re playing an a chord like that with your first finger what you want to avoid is that
Thinnest string so make sure that the first finger even when you reach up with that third finger there you want to make sure thinner string is well that one’s kind of sounding a tiny bit but remember you’re going to be strumming Now the other thing that i just noticed i’m doing there is my thumb is over as well muting the thickest string now i think for real beginners you don’t want to be using the thumb over the top yet okay because the reason i teach it
To go right around the back is to build up that muscle between your thumb and your first finger so that you can use it for bar chords okay because if you don’t develop that muscle back or it’s really pretty impossible so that’s one of one of the reasons why i suggest that
Beginners keep the thumb around the back but as you progress you definitely want to use to get used to having the thumb reaching around to mute the thickest string and on that acorn particularly When you’re doing that kind of riff it can be real helpful to have that thumb just muting the thickest string without it you get a lot of that thing it just just don’t sound as nice you can be super accurate with your picking but again in this style when it wants to
Be a bit relaxed and stuff you know trying to be super accurate with the pick in that thing kind of makes a little bit tension in there and i don’t know it’s i think it’s a better plan to mute the thickest string there if you
Can now on the g chord it’s a little bit more interesting and not many people do this but it’s adding the first finger there on the second fret of the fourth string again on beats two and four [Applause] [Applause] particularly muting that fifth [Applause] there is a couple of more advanced variations i’ll just show you real quick instead of just adding if you use fingers three and four for the g when you put down that second finger here you can also put down first finger here It doesn’t really work so great for this song but it’s a nice variation that you can add in to add a little bit of rock and roll the a chord version would be mixing the ornament that i talked about the a sus4 with the six so
It’s an a6 sus4 would be it’s technical [Laughter] kind of reminiscent of rolling stone sort of vibe Not that you want to go there for this song and i think on the original recording the slash part is played a little tighter than that so it’ll be not with the whole chord and the g probably played like this a little bit stretchier for most beginners that’s not going to be happening
Might even be played here i’m not exactly certain i’d need to do a little bit more research to figure out which part would be played as the second part the thing i would like you to get I keep going back to the d instead of back to the air i don’t know why i’m doing that there must be another song uh that does that but it’s the chord progression is definitely d a g a not going from the g back to the d well
Weird that sometimes a chord progression gets muddled up in one’s mind but you know what it is right so it’s going d i use take or g and back to a chord oh my god that’s getting very low i have to go up and up to that point
That’s the chord progression you’ve got the variations like i said the solo for this song is a really really great example of slasher’s kind of country five it’s again it’s a little bit stoney i i kind of hear the the stones acoustic kind of vibe there very much major pentatonic very much
Hitting chord tones really great solo to learn on your own just to have a go at transcribing i’ve got lots of lessons on the website about transcribing if you’re not really sure where to start but you definitely want to learn just starting and stopping and trying to figure it out
Write it down if you can in tab and see if you can work your way through the solo you might not get much of it done the first time you try but that’s the point second time you have a go you’ll learn a little bit more and the third
Time you have a little bit more and you get faster and faster as you practice funny that you get better at things when you practice who would have thought anyway i really hope that you’ve enjoyed this lesson and you’ve hit that subscribe button and slap me a like and
Let me know in the comments if you want me to do a detailed lesson on that solo and explain that what’s going on harmonically and all of that i’ll see you for plenty more lessons very soon you’ll take care of yourselves bye-bye

Brilliant lesson, describing all these great embellishments in details… Tks so much! Best wishes from Brazil!
thanks Justin!
Where the solo my man???
Did I miss the part where you told us the original song is tuned half step down?
Ha! I had that long hair also… and I loved playing this song. Just such a fun song, and the solo was fun to play as well.
D-A-G-D is Social D -Ball and Chain (as well as others i'm sure)
Thanks justin , enjoyed that
Man, I'm gonna drive my girl crazy learning this one. We live in a camper n a r,v. Park. No where to go but the bed…. So I sit here and strum and she's watching t.v. I did really love her.
She's starting to stink also…..
Is it just me or it sounds like deadflowers by rolling stone
You're great but I just need to see your fingers a little closer I'm one of them knuckle heads they don't know how to do much of anything cross finger know that but if I get you to get a close up of your fingers and what strings you're on because I can't tell if you're pinky finger and your middle finger or touching something if you could just be a little more explorative Explorer on your fingers closer if you can get what I'm saying see I can
Yet another half song lesson from justin the con
He made it sound like dead flowers with Axl n Gilby Clarke
This is so helpful Justin! Thanks a mil!👊🏽💜
If Weird Al – or someone less comedy-focused – did a cover with different lyrics, what might those lyrics be?
Solo please
Great channel… I'm waiting for tge second lead within the last part of this song… great thanks
Right in the "original" Slash was using the lower frets which tended 2 sound a bit "warmer" harmonically…thanks 😊
Hey justin, love your lessons, great teaching well done,.P.S.could you tell me what mm pick you use because i think a lot of us novices are caught out either using too heavy a pic for strumming,i think this would help us novices a lot ,cheers,Gary(ireland),.
Cool lesson, Justin, thanks. Yeah, a lesson on the solo would be ace.
Was a lesson on the solo ever made? Please don’t forget! Ty!
Always great take aways to spice up simple licks. Learned so much from you in 8 years and really want to say thank you Justin.
Who else was doing the Axl rasp in the beginning? “Oooohh yeah! But I had to kill her!!”
Great lesson but I think that’s Izzy,s part..
That Blanket must be special
This song is about a dog.
Justin is the best teacher on YouTube!
please make a video on the solo of this song
Noooo.. the progression is = D A G A…
I'm only in the beginning of the Stage 1 course but I just couldn't resist hearing Justin singing these lyrics. "…but I had to kill her…Hey, how ya doin', Justin here…" It did not disappoint.
I love how you alternate G D A chords!
You’re playing this one wrong. DAGA. Listen to the recording
Thanks , I Have always loved the song but couldn't work out the rhythm ,now it works
Just when I finally thought I had something figured out and sounding good with the D Sus chords , you had to go and add a pinky to the 4th fret!.
Aggghhj failure again..
Must learn that one now..
I just tried but my 3rd finger flattened out..
When I do barre chords my 3rd ,/4th go in opposite weirds directions too.
I've started putting a rubber band around the little buggers to train them how I WANT THEM TO GO!
If you could I have a request for a pretty fun song that I'm not sure many know or remember. Great White – Wasted Rock Ranger. Thanks Justin keep up the GREAT WORK!!!!
Great song Justin, would love you to do a lesson on the lead.
Great job Justin, thanks mate!
Awesome lesson! I forgot how much I loved this song back in my college days. Like so many others I got back into playing while in lockdown and this song is perfect for my current level of playing. Would love to have a go at the solo.
I'd like to learn the solo as well. Thanks for the lessons!
Anyone else think he looks like Tommy shelby
