Video Title: Born And Raised Guitar Lesson | John Mayer
[Applause] so [Applause] [Applause] Hey how you doing justin here today we are checking out born and raised by john mayer a really really fun acoustic guitar song you do need your bar chords and there’s a few little fancy twiddles going on here i’m going to take you through it as accurately as i can
Particularly for the intro a lot of the rhythm kind of changes up and there’s actually two rhythm guitar parts going later in the song so i’m going to give you some approximations but it’s definitely one of those things where if you keep your hand moving and stick to a
Kind of a basic vibe the rhythm part should kind of sort themselves out a bit i’ve gone for just a really short play through at the front there and i’m going to do a play through of the whole song at the end so if you dig that idea
Please do let me know in the comments below and subscribe to my channel if you don’t already i really appreciate your support so let’s start off by looking at the chords for the intro now the very first chord is a g chord i’m fairly certain this is the way
John’s playing you would be able to simplify it to play a regular open g with whatever fingering you like but to get exactly the right little embellishments here i’m fairly certain that john is playing this one with the thumb playing the bass note the fifth string is muted third finger down the
Fifth fret of the fourth string second finger down the fourth fret of the third string and first finger covers the thinnest two strings at the third fret okay it’s essentially a g bar chord like this but using your thumb to play the bass note now the reason that we want to do that
One is because we’re going to use little finger to do a little embellishment it’s possible that he would be stepping his third finger over i can’t obviously hear which one of those it is it’s kind of a bit more hendrix here to use your third
Finger uh i would suggest you do the one that’s most comfortable for you because it doesn’t really matter i’ll talk a bit more about that embellishment in a second but that’s the first chord is g the second chord is b minor seven okay nothing on the thickest string
Making sure it’s muted with the tip of your first finger second fret fourth fret with the third finger second fret still under the bar third fret with the second finger second string and thinnest string it’s gonna be the second fragrance that’s a b minor seven then we’re going to an f
We wanna be playing the f chord much like we do with the g chord i definitely hear some embellishments later in the song Where he’s hammering on that second finger from the open string so something to be aware of it’s not the embellishment used in the intro but you want to probably check out playing an f chord like that and then we’ve got a c chord open c he’s doing a little hammer on i’m
Going to talk a bit more about those embellishments in just a second so the basic chords are g b minor seven f and c so let’s talk a bit about the embellishments and the rhythm here i’m going to take it through one chord at a time the g chord
Let me just play it as this that’s the first bar again Okay like i said you can use your little finger for the embellishment or the third finger i tend to use the third finger myself but little finger works just as well so it’s 16th note strumming so four motions with the hand for each beat one
E and uh two e and uh three e and a four e and ah okay we’re playing a down on the beat one then there’s an upstroke just on the thinner strings on the last sixteenth note of beat one one e and a two e and and then little finger
Goes down or third finger goes down depending on which way you wanna do it for beat two it’s down and then it’s straight off again up down down up down up down down up down up down one e and a two the end then we’ve got three e and so three
E at the thinner string the and is playing the bass note three e and then four e and fourier is just strumming on the chord one e and a two e and Okay that’s the g chord the b minor is almost identical rhythmically but the embellishment note is going to be with the little finger little finger’s going to go down in the fifth fret of the second string in the same place One e and a two e and three e and four one e and a two e We just don’t have that kind of accented bass note that we have on the g so g [Applause] F now we’ve got a slightly different variation at the end the first part’s the same okay one e and a two e and but now we’ve got the last two beats are different little fingers going down here on the third fret for the embellished note here third fret of the second string That’s the last two beats down down up down up down down down up down up down so little fingers coming off just for those last two strums on the f the c chord We’ve got this little hammer on we start actually with the second finger off one e and a two and r three e and four e and a little bit difficult that one to count and explode it’s easier to play it One e and a two and up three e and E The rhythm of that c chord is actually not that difficult to play it just seems really difficult for me to be able to speak the count while i’m playing at the same time so let me go through now and play it for you slowly a few times
Through so you can get to grips with how all of this fits together so here we’re starting off on the g three four [Applause] So [Applause] Now that rough rhythmic pattern is what’s used for the verses as well but he starts to introduce changes to the rhythm almost immediately so that’s a really good kind of starting point but when you’re playing it for real if you play along with the original recording or playing it on your own you
Don’t have to adhere to that kind of rhythm really strictly in fact you don’t have to adhere to the rhythm strictly at all if you don’t want to i’m trying to give it to you so that you can learn the exact rhythm he’s played on the recording because it’s interesting and
Important to study the great guitar players exactly how they’ve done it you’ll learn new skills you’ll learn about new rhythms about embellishments about time keeping there is a lot of value in trying to learn little clips like this exactly like the record so i’d spend a little bit of time on that but
As soon as you got it you should learn to kind of loosen it up a little bit so it becomes your own kind of style so the verses are following the same thing but just a bit more loose there’s very rarely the the little inflection there on the b
Minor doesn’t happen all the time on the f a little bit more of this kind of action of the second finger lifting off It you can really start to experiment with that i wouldn’t go overboard with the embellishments probably better to do too few than too many if you i think that’s as a general rule uh you’re better off playing a little bit less especially if it starts to interfere
With the vocals and the melody it’s gonna it’s not such a great idea so when there’s singing going on try and keep your embellishments to the minimum maybe just putting them in in between the vocal lines if you really feel like you have to um so the verse is that chord sequence and
It plays uh the same thing around twice through so an eight bar uh sequence there for the first memory to the chorus the chorus the chord to e minor [Applause] g to c for a whole bar two three four e minor g So let’s just talk quickly about the rhythm in the chorus it’s a little bit straight up with the basic kind of pattern would be this down down down up down down down down up down up down down down up down down down down up down one
And two e and three and four e and a one and two e and again one and two e and three and four e and a one and two e and three and four e and but that would just really be a kind of a standard progression there’s a lot more
Going on than that but if you start with that and again as long as you’re keeping that hair moving you’ll be able to insert some of those little embellishments leave out some strums the main kind of thing it wants to do in that chorus is drive and you get that by
Having that feeling of the one and two and three and four they’ve got to be the kind of the loudest drums the other ones are just supplemental kind of keeping things cooking along so it does that sequence e minor g c e minus half of r g
For half bar whole bar of c it does that sequence four times through for the chorus then we end up with this one two and three four one two three which is just a little kind of a two bar bridge that gets us back into the verse
It’s literally it’s got this um a hit or an accent it’s sometimes called a push on the and after one on the when it changes from the e minor to the g one two and three four there’s a little bit very light strumming at the end of the bar but it’s
Essentially one two and three four but in reality You get a little bit of that really light strumming it’s one of those things about if you keep your hair moving all the time and you get really feel the rhythm in your in your strumming hand it means that you can add in those little things and it’ll
Always sound entirely sound right and it can be a bit more improvised a bit freer it doesn’t have to be a very specific little part there so after that it goes back into the intro uh plays the intro through the little four bar sequence then there’s another verse and there’s another chorus
And then we come to this fantastic little kind of bridgey part um really really cool riff on the g So just to explain what’s going on here we start with the g chord but using our third finger on the thickest string muting the fifth string little finger down the third fret of the thinnest string and then we’re putting first finger down in the first fret of the second string
And second finger down on the second fret of the fourth string technically this is a g6 sus4 chord very common kind of rolling stones this sort of sound a great yeah really cool vibey kind of rock and roll thing um what he’s doing here is he’s having it on beat two
On the and after three and beat four but it’s got a very specific rhythm pattern so i’m going to talk a little bit about that now and do it nice and slowly for you so we end up having one e and a two and three e Okay so one e and so it’s always coming on a down stroke the little uh additional notes for the chord one e and a two and Sounds kind of mechanical when i’m doing it like that trying to keep the count real straight but it’s just such a great little groove that so it does that only does it twice and then we go into the next part of the bridge which is going to be c
And at this point he’s going into even eighth note strumming so one and two and to g with a b bass that’s c g with a b bass second finger second fret fifth string little finger on the third fret of the second string muting the outside two strings
One and two and three and four and one and two three four this is one and two just lifting off the first finger on the and after one one e sorry the e after one one e and so it’s all down strokes c g with a b bass
Down up down and then we’re back to all down strokes again c two g with a b bass one e and two and three and four It does that three times through that sequence and then there’s this little bit where he does a g with a d bass now this is a very common little g triad shape first finger is covering the uh third fret of the thinnest two strings second finger
Goes down in the fourth fret of the third string it’s a g triad but we want the d bass note as well so we’re not playing the thickest two strings but the other ones we play and we go down up mute change to a d and then we’re playing a d so
One e and a two and Okay let me take you through that whole bridge there so you can see that section Do Then we got another verse then we got another chorus then we’ve got this little outro part which is still the e minor g to c there’s a little bit of improvising a little bit of solos harmonica stuff comes in but it’s still staying with e minor g c Now i’ve just written down that it does it twice but something’s telling me in my memory it might be three times through that little sequence at the end but it’s not really a big deal is it uh you can use your ears and tell whether it
Goes twice or three times i’m sure if you want to play along the very last time he does e minor and i think it’s a d with the g bass now it might just be john’s playing the d chord and the bass is playing the g
But i think and i’m not positive but i think i can hear this Little line on the guitar which would be a real you know john’s got funny elastic thumb that he can do this sort of stuff i find it quite challenging but you might like to have a go at it anyway which would be just doing e minor And then the last chord i’m not sure if it’s a regular c or a cr9 probably a c i think it’s the vocals that are playing this note here um so stick with a regular c but you might might find you prefer to finish on cr9 i’m sure john wouldn’t mind
So e minor one two three and four and to the c chord so on the g on the d chord to d at the on in the just a regular standard d but thumb is going to play that bass note g open a reach around to play the b note okay the
Fifth string it’s a bit of a reach around that one and then open d string to the c so e minor Okay it’s a really really tasty little ending that to go from here I mean john is full of tasteful songwriting guitar playing vocals everything else so uh i think this is a fantastic song to learn so many little nuggets of wonder to check out and things to explore after i’ve said goodbye i’m going to do a full play through along with the
Original recording with my headphones on if obviously if i played along and you could hear the original recording i’d have all of the you know copyright uh problems and stuff so i’m going to hear that but it’ll give you a chance to see how it’s all kind of working i won’t be
Playing exactly excuse me what john plays for the whole thing right there’s the embellishment sort of stuff is going to be a little bit my own i’ll try and keep it reined in and not go over the top with it um but i want to give you ideas of things
That you might want to try out as well once you’ve got the kind of the bare bones of it done please like i said let me know in the comments if you dig this kind of thing if you’re over on youtube please subscribe to my channel if you
Dig what i do because i really appreciate the support remember hundreds more lessons over on the website all for free you can check it all out in the link in the description i’ll see you for plenty more very soon you take care of yourselves bye-bye [Applause] [Applause] So [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] So [Applause] [Applause] so [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] do So [Applause] [Applause] So [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] You

F is not in G major scale. Can anyone tell me what mode is he using ?
I think the FBI are spying on us😊😂😅❤😅❤😅❤😅😂😅😂😂❤😂🎉🎉😂
❤❤❤😅😢🎉😢
Another great video. Thank you Justin.
A full playthrough at the end would be MEGA Helpful.
Love this song – great tutorial but I need pinky finger help lol! On that BM7 – I find it so hard to hold that cord and get the pink down on the 5th fret…ugh
Love the full play through at the end. Would be great to have one for every tutorial (getting greedy).
Great work!
Has anyone got a harmonica backing track
Beautiful tone. I love this song.
One could play this with embellishments using standard bar chords instead?
Few guitar teachers teach those embelishments
Complete playthrough is great. Vid would be even better if you could add checkpoints on the timeline like a lot of youtubers are doing
Another sublime lesson…thanks Justin. Play through is a stroke of genius. Please keep it up.
Can u pls do the tutorial for "I shall believe" by Sheryl .?❤❤❤
My favorite song, I recorded with a harmonica and guitar playing of this! But not brave enough to share unfortunately… Maybe one day 🙂
Playthrough at the end is a great idea.
Forex/stock expert, Dr. James Hamilton ongoing 14 days trading seminar is still on. Make sure you don't miss out on this rare opportunity on learning how to become a consistent profitable trader.
Never heard of this song, where's Suppers Ready by Genesis?
love the full playthrough!
For anyone struggling with the thumb reach arounds:
1.) Playing a standard barred G chord at the start with pinkie off, and just put it down for that one note on 5th fret G string sounds really close to the original and is a lot easier!
2.) For the little run at the end with the D/G around 20:00, You'll still have to play the bass G note with your thumb, but then try open A string, middle finger onto second fret for the B note instead of thumb then open D string into C chord. It's WAY easier than trying a massive reach onto the fifth string with your thumb.
My favourite guitar lesson of all time, thanks Justin, this took me months, but it sound amazing.
I love the complete play through!
"In The Blood " by jm would be great 👍
Outstanding job broh. Keep these videos coming.
Please pleaseeee do Walt Grace’s submarine test !!!!!!!
Justin, no doubting you’re a super talented teacher.but the thumbnails make you look a little creepy/insecure. My wife tells me hugging a guitar doesn’t look good…. I’m not sure what she means tbh. 😉
I watched this video two days ago.. but its been uploaded a year ago..
Great idea having the full play throughs.
Brilliant lesson an a really cool song!
Hey Justin, your thumbnail has a typo 😉
Justin you're killing it lately!
more JM please , always a pleasure
The thumbnail picture says "JoOHN MAYER" it should be "JOHN MAYER"
The playthrough and the end is great, I hope it ends up as a permanent feature of your excellent lessons.
Awesome lesson 👍
Very helpful when videos have a full play through…we appreciate that!
Justin please make all the John Mayer tutorials possible!!! Can we please have St Patrick’s day?
