Video Title: 4 Ways to Remove Objects in Premiere Pro
In this video I’m going to show you four ways to remove objects from your videos using Premiere Pro so we’re going to start out with a very simple studio shot and work our way up to a more complicated scene so let’s jump into the studio if you’re shooting knowing that
You’re going to want to remove something after the fact what you can do is shoot something called a clean plate and what this means is just shooting the background with no other objects in it so in this particular shot I’m shooting a laptop and I have my hand and some
Fishing line in frame and I want to get rid of the hand you can’t really see the fishing line because it’s clear and we’re shooting on a white background so I’m going to put my clean plate clip on the bottom and drag my clip with the
Objects in it over top then I’m going to make sure the top clip is selected go to effect controls opacity and click on the pen tool I’m going to reduce the size of my video screen up here so I can more easily draw around my object and then
I’m going to draw around the hand making sure that I leave enough room as the hand just moves a little bit so now you can see the mask is around our hand and we’re going to click invert mask and now our hand is gone and if we play our clip
Back we can see that our hand has gone throughout our whole video now what if we’re in the studio and we want to remove a moving object from our video for example I have this video that I shot of a cereal box and I have it on a
Tripod and if I put a stationary mask on this tripod sometimes it would cut into that cereal box so I want to make sure that the mask is moving with the tripod so we’re going to start by doing the same things that we did in the last
Video we’re going to drag our clip with our objects in it over top of our clean plate draw around the object we want to remove and then click reverse mask in this particular video because the object I want to remove is so close to the cereal box I need to be very careful
About where I’m drawing my mask so what I like to do is I like to draw my mask a little bit lower than the cereal box then once I’m happy with it I’m going to go back over to effect control and mess with the mask expansion so I
Can get it very very close to the edge of the box so once I’m happy with this frame I’m going to go back over to effect controls and go down to mask path and track the mask forward one frame by clicking on this arrow then I’m going to
Adjust the mask by dragging it down so I can see my box and using the mask expansion to bring it back up to where I want it and I’m going to go through and do this for every frame of my video so if you’re finished and you play back
The video and the bottom of your box is kind of moving up and down it’s because your mask isn’t in the same spot each time so it’s cutting into the box so you can click on your mask and go back through and adjust it in places where you’re having an issue
So I actually shot this on both a white background and a black background and I found the black background was much easier to light and to remove objects from because the shadows kind of fade into black and you don’t have to be as exact with your mask so I would
Recommend thinking about what background would be easier to remove your object from if you’re working in a studio so now we’re going to get out of the studio and remove this person from this field scene so we don’t have a clean plate because we just went out and shot some
Footage and realized after the fact that this person was in our shot and now we want to remove them so we’re going to do the same thing that we did in the last two videos we’re going to duplicate our clip drag it on top draw a mask around
Our subject and then click invert then we’re going to click on our bottom clip go to effect controls and click on motion then we are going to draw your clip around until the trees in the ground line up to make this easier you can also reduce the opacity of the top
Clip and this will allow you to see both Clips at the same time so once we’ve lined up our clips we’re going to do a couple more adjustments we’re going to increase the mask feather and this is going to smooth the transition from our first clip to our second clip then we
Just need to check the exposure of our bottom clip it may be a little off because it’s from a different section of our frame so we can go over to lumetri color and adjust the exposure so that it blends in better and there you go we removed a stationary object from our scene
So now what if you have a moving object in the same scene we can’t do the same thing because if we do that it’s just going to look weird and it’s not going to fit in so duplicate your clip and drag it over top then we’re going to do
The same thing as before we’re going to draw a mask around our object and then track that mask frame by frame the mass doesn’t need to be too tight to our subject but we should keep it fairly close when we’re done tracking our mask then we’re going to click invert now
Once we’re done that we’re going to click on our bottom clip right click speed and duration and hit the box that says reverse speed then we’re going to play our Clips back and you can see at the beginning and end of our clip we’ve gotten rid of our object and that’s
Because when we reverse the speed of our bottom clip we were putting the part of the frame that there was no object where our mask was so go ahead and delete the part of the bottom clip where objects come into the mask so now we’re left
With this hole in the middle of our clip and what we’re going to do to fix this is we’re going to grab another doop clip of our clip and we’re going to go through this video and find parts of the video where there’s nothing in the particular part of the frame that our
Mask is if we look at my finished version you can see that there’s a lot of tiny little clips and this is because there was a lot of other subjects in the frame there were only small pieces of time where some parts of the frame had no
Objects at all so basically what we’re trying to do by this method is create a clean plate by using little pieces of our clip where there is no object in the frame and we’re done so I hope this wasn’t too confusing if this video helped you hit
That like button if you want to see future videos please subscribe and I’ll see you in the next one

I have a new tutorial that shows how to remove objects in moving video 🙂
https://youtu.be/nh1cbPTvkJw
I still get confused with the "psychology" of the term mask with video editing. In the first example with the laptop, a mask is drawn around the hand – but the hand is still visible and the laptop disappears…. until you select inverse mask. Seems like it should be the other way around lol
Can you remove the shadow to your left with this same method or would you need After Effects content aware fill? I am not critiquing the video,. I've had sometimes shadows or light spill on furniture in the past when shooting interviews with a three point lighting setup. Thanks.
Thanks for this.. 🙂🙂
This is the best masking tutorial on youtube! Finally made it click in my head how they work))
Really I like your tutorial plz uploads more
For the moving object don't you think clearing the background with photoshop for the object we don't want and then using it as a background in premiere Pro will be easier ?
Thanks Sarah. 👍🙂
Thank you so much I needed this! After looking at your content and then your subscriber count…it's so not fair 🙁 you deserve more subscribers!! All the besttt
Very helpful. Thank you.
Best video
Thankyou frm india 😊

Hi, Im trying to remove a sound guy from my footage and everytime i use the mask feature it turns blue and doesnt actually disappear. what should i do?
You lost me on the last section
Thank you for this amazing tutorial! It would be also so cool to know some tricks for the moving footage, when the camera is not still.
Thanks Sarah for this video. You've answered questions I had about masking that no one else answered. Subscribed.
Good tips, but look into the lens when you’re talking to your audience. Looking off to the side looks bizarre.
Thanks Good Trick in Good Speed! A better remove moving obj Tutorial than most !
great tips, forgetting to record a stationary shot has made it complicated on myself but I'll work around it, noted for next time though 👍
This was the only video out of all those stupid tutorials that actually helped! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much 🙂
