Video Title: I Used to Love Her – Solo Guitar Lesson | Guns N Roses
One two one hey how you doing justin here today we are checking out slash’s awesome solo in i used to love her really heavily requested after i did the rhythm lesson a little while back first thing i want to mention i’m doing it in standard tuning okay now the original recording
Is in e flat tuning so you’d have to tune all of the strings on your guitar down by one semitone i’m not doing that but i have given you the backing track that i used at the intro is going to be at the end of the video as well so if
You want that to practice along means that you can keep your guitar instead of tuning and have a play along with that as well or tune your guitar down to play along with the original recording or what i usually do is tune the original recording up using software like
Transcribe you might find that a handy hint as well let’s get into a close-up and check it out one lick at a time i mean that is an all-time classic country lick the idea here we’re holding down the thinnest two strings at 10th fret with a little finger and bending
So it’s actually bending up to this little d triad which is the first chord top part of this chord So bend on the ninth fret third finger third string little finger goes down play the thinnest string second string play the third tree again and release the bend then seventh fret ninth fret okay that’s where it’s changing to the a chord again we’ve gone to the note e which is a chord tone
Of the a chord okay the note e here so okay nice note to stop on there for the a lots of variations here definitely a lick that you should be checking out if you anywhere into major pentatonic and kind of country vibey stuff next leg really nice one again d major pentatonic
Still seventh fret ninth fret on the fourth string twice playing the note d that’s the seventh fret on the third string then it’s a little kind of i call it a ghost because it’s a bit lighter than the other notes ninth fret seventh fret on the third string then
Little finger on the tenth fret of the second string then the ninth fret bend third finger third string and we finish on that no egg again now i think somewhere along the way i started going instead of here i’ve been putting it on the fourth street i have no idea why
Sounds pretty cool to me that way as well so i think i played it wrong in a little intro bit but it’s definitely on the record then there’s this little which again it’s like a little fill ninth fret seventh fret on the third string tenth fret seventh fret on the second string
Again it’s a little bit lighter i’m not sure about that last night i’m pretty sure that’s where it is it’s a little lost in the mix now the next leg this all-time classic this is again we’re back on the d chord 10th fret 12th fret on the second string
10th fret on the thinnest string and we go back to right at the end one and is a 12th fret bend uh third finger thinnest string 12 10 12 12 12 10. okay you can listen to the rhythm or count it one and two and three and four and one and two
Three and four and one two and three and four then we’ve got a little bit of a jump up here now little finger is going to go down 17th fret on the thinnest string third finger we’ll do a tone bend on the 17th fret on the second string
So to bend release mute it and then play it when it drops down again [Applause] we got 15th 17th 15th on the second string now very cool classic country chromatic lick okay so 17th fret second string tone bend then we’ve got 14 15 16 17 and then we’re back onto that bend there
Now there’s a few different approaches to fingering it this isn’t particularly fast so i feel like i can jump my third finger over there pretty comfortably if it was too much faster i want to get my little finger down there so it’s really up to you what uh feels comfortable but
Now this little part this is another one of those little classic things there’s the root note d loads of little uh ideas that you can get off this one trick so we’ve got 17th fret bend and release flick it off to the 15th fret 16th fret on the third string
17th fret on the second string back to the 16th fret and finishing with the 15th fret on the second string classic lick so the chromatic leg then this then it’s a 17th fret tone bend and release on the thinnest string now we’ve got 17th bend and release
Then seventh bend release and going down to the 15th fret 17th fret 16th fret on the third string back to 15th fret on the second string if i can speak today we’ve got a very similar lick now 17th fret bend and release then down to the 15th fret back to 17th
Fret still on the second string then 16th fret on the third string 15th fret 17th fret 15th fret on the second string okay let me do that whole section a bit slower because it’s it’s kind of a lot going it’s not that difficult and especially with the count
Uh you might want to check the website for the tab as well that you’ll probably find that pretty helpful so let’s do that whole section slowly from the chromatic run okay with the count two three and four and one and and a little bit flat there so bend pick pick pick release
Spending on the end after four so three four and one and two and three this next lick can feel a little bit weird because more commonly played right on the beat starting on the beat and this time we’re starting on the and after four so we have this three
Four and one and two it’s a little bit weird so it’s 17th fret second string tone bend little fingers going down the 17th fret of the thinnest tree then another bend then playing the finished string again bend again thinnest string then we’ve got this other part let’s
Just deal with the bending part so this first one the first bend started the and after four so it’s really important that you got that count right so three four and one and two three and four and one two and three and four and one okay that last part
17th fret tone and release tone bend and release 15 17 16th fret on the g string 5 15 17 15 16 15. and the last lick a tribute to chuck berry or the stones or something uh 10th fret thinnest two strings played twice it’s on beats two and three one two three four
Ten ten then third finger is going to go down play the twelfth fret strings two and three then tenth fret on the third string eleventh fret on the third string play the 12th fret on the fourth string twice and littlefinger goes down on that 13th fret of the second string four one two
Real slow with the count three four one two three and four and one two and three and four and one two three and four and one and two and three and four and one Let me just run through a little bit of harmonic analysis of each lick as well and talk about the chord that it’s being played over just to help you see it in context if you want to use the licks in your own improvisations which i think is
Really the best reason to be learning solos like this so the very first lick the very first part just placed around a d great finish though going because it hits that right in the ankle the open e string it’s there it’s a chord tone then here we go we target that note
Which is in the g chord and then we’re back to targeting the e so we really hear that you can really hear the sound of this you get the idea it’s really following the harmony really well so d a g a d then we’re back on the a then a g
Back to the a targeting that e note again on the a chord now all of this stuff on the d this is bending this note from the second to the third in the key of e this would be like a little a shaped board there if you can imagine it’s these two notes
Octave down lower you can see [Applause] here that’s on the a g look targeting this note here the b which is the chord tone in the key of g again and then we’re back on the a back to d this is the g a say here d g d d
It’s really beautifully done this is just kind of classic major pentatonic here really obvious part of the d chord i would definitely recommend going over this solo and checking out exactly what all of the notes are and how they relate to each of the chord tones it’s one of
The things that slash is quite incredible with he’s often just using the major pentatonic or the bb king blues box kind of simple harmonic tools he uses fancy stuff too but often his most melodic solos are using the simple tools but really outlining the harmony well it’s a really pretty special gift
That he’s got it doesn’t sound forced it doesn’t like he’s chase sound like he’s chasing the harmony his ear is just kind of guiding him into the perfect path there and i think it’s an amazing thing to study definitely something you should be checking out if you’re a tab for this
Song do go check out the website justinguitar.com now got tabs for all of the songs on the whole site all of the ones that i do lessons on which is pretty awesome if you happen to be over on youtube really appreciate you hitting that subscribe button slap me a like let
Me know in the comments what your other favorite slash solos are i’m thinking like knocking on heaven’s door might be a good one to do as well because that’s another one of those ones which is mostly major pentatonic but he highlights the chords so beautifully in
That tune as well like there’s so much good stuff appears to check out if you’re a slash fan i really hope that you’ve checked out my sweet child of mine lessons as well the solo in that song is definitely one of my favorite to play it’s full of all slashers trademark
Licks just a great solo you should definitely be checking out if you’re a fan of this style of music so i’ll see you plenty more very soon you’ll take care of yourselves bye-bye one two one do You

Slash was 22 and 23 when he did those solos on Appetite and Lies. When you got it, you got it. Genius.

Good work man!!
Happy 5th anniversary on becoming a dad.
Hi Justin. I love all your work and you are an amazing teacher. However, you are such an amazing player that everything you do looks just effortless to a point I have no idea which finger you press and/or which string haha. Wish you emphasised it a little more for us noobies.
Awsome!
Please do the second solo, it´s awesome too, thanks
Yes ! More Guns N’ Roses stuff Justin !!
