I worked as a product designer at eBay between March 2022 to July 2023 the projects that I’ve worked on help to bring an additional 17 million USD annual revenue to eBay here’s what I did as a seller on eBay you can use payperclick advertising to sell your products faster eBay will show your
Products to more people if you use this advertising product however a seller have to understand where to set up this advertisement how to set up this advertisement and how to manage this advertisement so what I did at eBay include increasing the entry point to payperclick advertising product and then
I made the ad setup process easier and then I helped to design the management system if you feel like what I said was very easy to understand oh trust me it definitely doesn’t feel easy when I was designing this there were lots of complexity I had to really understand
The business strategy in order to make any of these Mak sense and in this video I will share with you one among many projects that I’ve worked on at eBay and this is called quick setup for pay-per-click advertising this is the pay-per-click advertising campaign creation flow
Before I worked on this project so to start an advertising campaign here’s what you need to do first you put in the campaign name for example back to school sales and then you set a daily budget let’s say I want to spend $5 maximum every day
Then you set a start date and an end date let’s say I want to try this campaign for two days the next step is where it get confusing a lot of sellers don’t understand what is an ad group so they might put in let’s say Ad group
Number one and then they need to choose the listings for their first ad group and some sers just simply choose everything that they want to promote and here I’m just going to choose all of my listings but then it will run into an issue because if you select very
Different products into the same ad group the eBay algorithm will return keywords that are relevant to all of your products but these keywords will be applied to every single listing in the same ad group so instead of choosing wallet and boots in the same ad group I
Should have set up a ad group that’s called wallet and then another ad group that’s called boots and then put my wallets into the wallet ad group and then put my boots into the shoes add group and here we go if I add this keyword this campaign will not perform
Well because well you have micel course keywords for your coach bag and then you have Coach keywords for your micel course shoes and because of some engineering constraint you can only add a new ad group on this campaign overview screen making the entire process difficult to understand and also very
Long to complete so here’s what I designed I designed a feature called quick setup this time let’s say you are still running the back to school’s campaign $5 daily budget running the campaign till the end of the week and by default we will select the quick setup
For you what does the quick setup mean you will soon understand here all you need to do is choose all the listing you want to promote for this campaign let’s say I’m choosing all of my listings and then I will add it to the campaign and
Now you can see that instead of launch campaign the call to action button is not called review campaign so here let’s say you review The Campaign into that we automatically set up the ad groups for you so here you have the wallets in the wallets ad group you have boots in the
Boots ad group and you have Hues in the Hues ad group and the keyword in these ad groups is available to reveal here so now instead of setting up all the ad Group by yourself and don’t understand how to set them up what it really means this feature helps you to do everything
For you and you can still do the adjustment in this page and plus it is the default choice so we did make a lot of decision on the choice architecture there to make it feels like it’s a seamless process and now if we launch it you’re taking back to the advertising
Dashboard and your campaign is launched this project was not easy to design and one of the biggest challenge we face for this specific project is scope creep there were many things things that’s going on in the eBay advertising road map and pay-per-click advertising was a beta product at the time so there’s lots
Of room for improvement for every step along the way and for every page every feature every section but for this project we really had to nail down what is the specific point of the user Journey flow that we can intervene to significantly improve user adoption setup speed and campaign performance
This is the final result and I hope you like this produ project other than this specific project I also want to share with you some challenges that I faced and how I overcame them first I realized that design system favors customer facing mobile apps but I was working on
A product that’s designed for Sellers and only available on websites so my projects needed a lot of design system components that were not available at the time so what I did is that I booked a few design system office hours with the design system team and I invited all
The designers working on similar advertisement products because we share the same problem and then we explain to the design system team what we are building and what components we might need of course this is more like building a long-term relationship rather than a oneoff meeting so throughout the
Time I worked at eBay I have a continuous strong relationship with the design system team and we together updated and worked on many new components for seller facing products another challenge that I faced is that I realized iiz the projects I work on has a significant impact on eBay
And there were many relevant stakeholders for my first project I spent a lot of one-on-one meetings with my product manager but then I realized that all stakeholders need to be involved in the project as early as possible because everyone has something new to share so for the rest of my
Projects my product manager and I will always set up early on stakeholders kickoff meetings to hear the perspective from different stakeholders so every everyone contribute early and in this way we get the context and clarify engineering constraint early on this helped us to save time and come to a
Viable solution faster another challenge I faced is that there always seem to be this gap between design and frontend Engineering production and at the end of the day the user will only see what’s in the production so for me it’s very important that my design is carried out
The way that it’s supposed to be it doesn’t have to be exactly the same but at at least there’s no bug and there’s no alignment issues so what I did is asking the product manager to always add a design QA ticket for the software Engineers because their team works on
Jira and now that design quality assurance one of the ticket they will have to send their production to me and ask me for front-end feedback before they launch the feature to millions of eBay sellers that’s significantly improve the frontend UI people see today relate to advertising products I will
Share with you another one which is ux research ux research takes time and investment and we have limited people working on it so in order to make sure we get user feedback early we incorporated a rapid feedback session for all of our products in this way we
Don’t have to wait for the user research team to spare time and help us to do everything the product manager and I can write out these questions and interview our users in a day that help us to get feedback early iterate faster and it’s so much better than pushing everything
