Video Title: so…I tried working at an interior design firm
This is something I’ve wanted to do for a really long time now in middle school around the same time film making stole my heart so did interior design so spoiler alert I went to film School met Becky and film school started the YouTube channel worked in the real world quit the real
World so that we can continue the YouTube channel the rest is history anyways what you need to know is that although we do a lot of interior design here on the channel I was never able to explore
It the professional way or study in school but I still have a lot of imposter syndrome when it comes to interior design and really I just want to know what goes on day-to-day at an interior design firm what does my alternate reality look like hm it just got
Deep I decided to reach out to a few different interior design firms while visiting here in Austin Texas to see if any of them would be open to having me intern with them for a week and I ended up connecting with architectural digest approved interior designer Liz mcf of Liz mcf
Interiors and they said yes to me interning so I’m going to spend the next week with Liz and her team being the best darn intern that I can be on that note I mean I have a few things outline
For you to do Liz actually had an assignment for me I want you to show me some options yeah show me what finishes they come in what they look like and how much they cost yeah I hope
My iPad’s charged that’s it okay well now tell me what you would to well um I’m used to being the boss so this is going to be a little bit of a shift for me but I am ready to be humbled and
I’m walking in with an open [Music] mind bye bye love you love you I am a little nervous I definitely picked out my outfits for the week so that I didn’t have to worry about that every morning and now I’m about to head into Liz mcfa interior office Liz mcf studied at the
Academy of Art and started her firm in 2012 and now boasts a team of three designers two procurement coordinators and one business manager her firm is highly published and highly awarded and from the brief interview I had with her I can see that her and her team are extremely busy
With some impressive and fast moving design projects so who knows what I’m walking into here [Applause] morning hi good morning you guys met each other right yes me Lindsay Lindsay can I have a burrito mhm interesting breakfast but whatever makes you happy we’re [Music] Texans all right well Welcome
To caly our intern for the week yeah I don’t know if you guys see anything on that note I mean I have a few things outlined for you to do one is there’s a box which I want uh the
It’s like a little shelf thing to put together and then there’s a box of fabrics that just need to be sorted nothing’s going to blow up or fall to pieces if you mis categorize something it’s
Good to know yeah just look and if you have any questions let us know every Monday the LMI team has a big team call and updates each other on what they’re working on the progress of their
Projects discuss the schedule for the week and get answers that they need from Liz like if this CFA is approved CFA is a cut for approval yeah so what happens is we sourced this for our client and then they pull from the actual yardage [Music] delicious thank you does anybody else
Need breakfast from my [Music] interns since I don’t actually have anything to share in the meeting I decided to get started on the task of building the printer stand and washing some dishes and then after Monroe we’ll go straightish but then Thursday we’re going to Round Top I don’t
Know if the client’s going with us so it may just be you and [Music] me so you’re going to drop this off just going to give you the address and so the Fabrics really go in all the bins okay and then the wallpapers go these are mislabeled can
Even just take the labels off of these okay I think we could kind of do color okay [Music] okay I’m going to go on some runs now UPS Store fabric to a client and return some tile samples I’m really excited for tomorrow because we’re going to be on site visiting clients later in
The week we’re going to this special antique show that only comes around once a year or twice a year I have an exciting week ahead of me but right now errands I like errands too you need a little bit of variety in your day you [Music] know hi yeah okay drop [Music]
Done back at the office I’m starting the task of organizing the wallpaper samples you’ll see the office has a bunch of wallpaper samples rug samples and fabric samples that can be used for reupholstery or window treatments and more having all of these
Samples at the fingertips of the designers allows for easier sourcing and [Music] inspiration man yeah it’s a really unusual house with this uh ceiling oh yeah I think the clients been through a couple Architects that were like what the hell just get rid of this and
They don’t want to that’s fine we’re going to have to replace it but we’re going to keep the concept where does the role of interior designer begin an architect kind of end you know often times all the architectural details are defined by the architect and really about the selections
And elevations of exactly how is the bathroom going to function in terms of storage and how’s it going to look what are they going to be the materials what’s the lighting typically our role is to you know I always joke that it’s the coloring we were coloring in the coloring book I
Like that analogy yeah [Music] that’s we kind of joke that this it like looks so sweet and quaint in the front and it the property just keeps going and going and it’s like this big surprise in the
Backyard just super fun putting a little bit of the charm back in honestly [Music] mhm oh wowe yeah yeah yeah isn’t it amazing and then there’s almost this like Japanese aesthetic and there’s an office down there and so we’re not even touching that you just would never
Know that this is back here literally do you get called first does the architect get called we got called first did you get that on film yeah and then who finds the architect we did it always totally different okay it’s not uncommon that we come in after the clients have an architect
And The Architects are like hey we need you to select all these finishes and we don’t do that there are some architects who do but for the most part they don’t and so then we get called in and
We go through all the things and that at that stage it’s usually pretty early so we may say hey did you think about a drop zone or were you going to put all your stuff or you have
Four dogs maybe you want I can’t imagine not starting with you I know I know a lot if you could describe the style that you’re going for in like three words what would it be well you
Know it’s a 19 40s I know I always say 20s 1940s Bungalow that got renovated with taking out some charm so we’re going to try to put the charm back in you know definitely period relevant mosaic tile
Funky fines unabashed use of color and texture and funky we’re not afraid to reupholster a pick up a sofa on the side of the road and reupholster it in badass fabric it said three words you gave me like 45 sorry I would say charming and Charming colorful and collected yeah collected that’s
Good tagging along with Liz today reminds me so much of when I was renovating my house these contractor and design meetings in like the space that’s half done not even half done just like framed and you’re trying to picture everything and walk through all the different possibilities uh takes a lot of brain Power the character in this house is beautiful so this house I saw it online and I just was like oh my gosh it was it was totally untouched but it was just so perfect untouched condition Bungalow and I just was like obsessed with it and I’m always afraid that somebody’s going to
Buy it and tear it down or just mess it up and so I just wanted to mess it up myself the notion is to just really save this original part and then add on a very contemporary Edition and so
That’s how we found Josh I wanted a really really contemporary outside the box type of architect that could do something really different than what we do which I love the Vintage charm and The Bungalow and the you know beautiful tile details but I wanted somebody to
Bring in something you know really modern and so that’s what you get you this is the original house and I’ll take you through it but this is where it stopped right here and so just to have
Fun with it we just it literally runs a line this is the new part of the house so the new floors run in a totally different direction cuz why not these are obviously original this
This was where the kitchen was you know everything from here on is brand new and super and you know same and a lot of things were moving around we were like moving pieces these doors are all the original doors moved in different places there was no door we took this casing and trim
And put it here and yet it still really feels like an old [Music] house and then here this was a bathroom we’ve reconfigured it so all new tile love this tile pretty fun right and so there the important part about this job is there’s no client not really I mean there’s an
Investor so basically when I found this house I found it at like 4:00 in the morning cuz I’m a really early riser and it was a Sunday so I just kind of waited until it was appropriate
To text people and I found two people and then the investors are really silent in terms of they don’t care what the tile looks like they’ve just entrusted me to you know help save the
House I love this style and I know you love this style but are you worried at all about finding the right buyer for this house sure part of the reason I wanted to do it was to save the house
Have fun do what I want to do and yeah we’ll see it only takes one we only one person and I also think you either get this notion of like it’s the old meets new so when we go to the next
Part you’ll see it’s super contemporary uh which is probably where the owner of the house would live so then in there there’s a um main closet double vanity and a kind of a wet room so you get the shower and the free-standing tub all together so the separation between the toilet
Room and the shower is glass but it’s readed glass so it’s obscured I loveed glass I know so we and it’s a nice tie to the to the old character of the H that’s right absolutely yeah [Music] absolutely I probably should have been recording this whole drive back to lizz’s
Office because I feel like I had a smile on my face the whole time I am having so much fun just being surrounded by this creativity being surrounded by these kind of like endless opportunities that design allows and the different directions
That you can go this is just a lot of fun I’m really sad that this is going to be over cuz there’s definitely a chunk of me that wishes this was my life and I know we do a lot of
Interior design but our main thing is actually producing videos okay let’s go do some intern Jobs [Music] Have a great day have a good day hold on just got a message from Liz looks like we’re going to the client space alone this thing where you develop you have like this $5 million is that a fund the Sor
Girls fellow Canadians a lot of interior design it’s like uh HDTV for yeah well the whole point we call the mythical accelerator is essentially uh that’s the podcast I was listening to on the drive over here and that’s pretty cool Howie Mandel knows who the star girls are hey Howie
And yes if you guys don’t know we have accepted Ed an investment and we’re working closely with them to like work on the next stage of growth for the s girls some exciting things coming anyways I need
To get into work because um I I’m an intern today I’m not a boss today I’m not mentioned on podcast today I’m with Alex we’re running some errands and going to a client’s house and we brought a minivan for a
Reason so we’re bringing in the pieces of a bed frame for the client’s guest bedroom and we’re also picking up this banet seating that wasn’t working for the client in their space but I am loving this Stone table with the upholstery it’s so
Rich okay we probably could have gotten both in there but we probably would have just stacked them yeah and it would have been actually maybe even not with the legs we’re just uh driving back and I was telling Alex about some of my favorite videos that I filmed and I was
Explaining the stooping I call Doc that I I filmed if you haven’t seen it you should check it out and I was saying that so many people created stooping accounts for their cities and then we just pulled up the stooping Austin one and it said um inspired by the stooping New York account
And the sorry girls so wow so full circle I’m in Austin now maybe we need to go stooping but we’re actually not going supering we’re going antique shopping tomorrow which I’m so excited about it will be pric I pricier than free yeah you guys can’t stop talking about Round Top so
The expectations are high now when I got back to the office Liz actually had an assignment for me um okay so here’s a thing that we need to work on which is at the house that we went to yesterday we
Are pretty much done I mean they’re installing the lighting you can see everything’s done the only thing I haven’t selected is cabinet hardware essentially she needs cabinet hardware choices for all of the Cabinetry at her investment property she’s really trying to blend that
Old meets new style she preferen that she likes maybe black or Chrome hardware and definitely something that’s quality but also affordable I’m going to send you also a form which is to keep track of every single selection in a job site we call that a construction schedule all
Of the specif spe ifications that go into the builders actually creating the home are defined in this one document there’s so many moving parts we like to keep it all together the one thing that needs to be filled in is the cabinet hardware I want you to show me some options show
Me what finishes they come in what they look like and how much they cost and if you need to go back over there to check you are certainly welcome to go over there I hope my iPad’s charged I do think
It’s a really good idea to visit the location again I’m now heading back to count out all the knobs that we’re going to need as well as just get a sense of the [Music] style before I
Head home to work on this assignment I have an idea of a quick stop I want to make so restore has tons of second hand building materials including knobs and they are only $150 each at this location the hard part is just finding enough knobs of quality and in good [Music] condition Today we are at Roundtop specifically Market Hill an antiquing show in Roundtop which is a town and also a Destin for thrifting and antiquing we have a list of things that we need and we’re going to take a [Music]
Look it’s surprisingly comfortable you got to sit in it it’s like 300 years of butt sitting in this no 100 years it’s kind of like swoop detail it’s really comfortable for my butt anyway yeah for my butt too yeah this it’s everything it’s everything it’s everything everyone
Check yourself out you can hang your stuff oh no they’re not for the dog they’re for The Umbrellas so they doesn’t leak okay we would use it for the dog we both thought it was for food and
Water you’re right it is for the umbrellas which is very clever also look at the little beat so cute oh my God it’s so cute is the designer I’m definitely keeping an eye out for dining chairs for me two little ones for the
Kitchen and then also maybe a chair to put in my living room the one that Michelle died look how cute wao this is honestly kind of like going to museum Furniture Museum it really
Is I mean you going learn a lot how long does it take to um like start and finish a project depends on if it is a construction project where we’re working through the plans with an architect and the client and the Builder and then we build it and then we decorate it
You know that whole process can be 2 or 3 years easily 6 months depending on what it is to yeah 3 years we’ve definitely had projects take that long I was jok with my therapist I’m
I know more than you do about these people right like I’m in their homes I know a lot about their relationship their relationship with their kids whether they walk their dog or not like I’m really honored to be in that and I take that that’s a really sacred relationship to
Me it’s like you know I don’t share that stuff I don’t even share that stuff with my closest friends I mean this is real life and I talk with clients about that too I’m like we’re designing
For you to live here I mean actually say this to clients when we’re doing a project where we’re doing a custom home save for somebody and we’re building something that they they don’t even live in that house right maybe we’re building new or they’re renovating I always like
To go visit the clients at their current house and I say like don’t try to make it something for me yeah because I want to know that you take your shoes off at the front door or you do sit
At the kitchen table you never sit in your dining room or you know how do you really live what are the things because everybody’s different right how people actually live is is pretty [Music] critical Okay so today is the last day of my internship and I am at a coffee shop I’m finishing up my cabinet hardware presentation that I have later this afternoon um I’m taking this very seriously I’m making sure that I have everything done that’s asked for me all the hardware selections for the
Pantry kitchen main water closet and utility as well as filling out the cabinet hardware tab in the construction schedule I’m still learning so much about the interior design world and I’m so excited to present my ideas to Liz I have some ideas that I’m not sure if she’ll go for including
The fact that I already bought some Hardware when I was at restore and I saw these little Chrome knobs I just thought they were perfect for the main water closet and I hope she likes
Them they were $3 total I mean my gift to Liz but I am really curious as to what Liz is going to think about my ideas I’ve been reflecting on this experience and I feel like there’s so many
Takeaways that I have so as you know we change up our spaces a lot because we have this skill set and interest to do it and when you’re dealing with Scrappy budgets it means that it’s possible to
Change it up all the time I feel like when you’re hiring a professional interior designer you’re not only paying for your time but also high-end pieces and therefore you’re going to be less likely
To switch up your style to swap out a piece of furniture or paint a wall in the future so that’s something that I really admire about professional interior design is that it’s made to be timeless not only in material but also design something that goes Way Beyond the world of interior
Design but I was reminded of it this week is the power of networking and personal relationships as an introvert myself I know that might be intimidating to hear but I do think it’s so important for carving your path or taking the next step in your career having trusted people in your
Circle allows you to do your job better it might connect you to the next big opportunity and it honestly just makes your life easier if you know the right people to call when you have a problem
That you need to solve I saw this with Liz whether was a past client that we ran into on the street or the builders and Architects that she works with on a day-to-day and finally the bud bugs I
Guess they’re just all relative because although $130,000 or $300,000 might seem a lot to you and me to somebody else that might be their savings or maybe just a portion of their household income that they want to dedicate to creating their home at the end of the day I think we all just
Want a safe space where we can come home to and we are surrounded by things that we love and people that we love uh and we can just be comfortable and relaxed next okay should we go present some
Cabinet [Music] hardware okay here we go I know I’m excited how did you find your assignment I found it fun okay good I hope you like the vibe I was going for okay me too starting with the pantry
I just put a little feeler up here you can see here I went with some of this porcelain you know that’s what we have in the kitchen right wait this is in my kitchen oh in here oh nowh that’s a great
Knot mine’s a little mine’s the brass this is like a more modern version okay well now tell me what you would do I don’t know I’m really excited by these three options honestly and then this if you
Just want to lean into it but I think like looking at the pantry with those two units and then seeing that detail getting pulled in I thought would look really cool so I kind of like that middle left
One where it brings in a little bit of the white and the black yeah I mean I think that was really smart to look at that existing hutch so next up is the kitchen again a little Vibe taste but I
Did like your original Direction which was the simple simple yeah simple so either black or oil rubbed bronze are kind of the options I went for then in the kitchen yeah we have knobs and pulse
Are these the only Appliance poles you found yeah so let’s say we do this one on the top left which I do like it’s just that like the finishes may not always be the same that is a tricky thing I think
We’ll just need to but good job unseen that and I don’t think we talked about that specifically no I just I saw I saw it on the shops you’re just smart so this is tour utility so you know you can
Do something that potentially ties back into the pantry then you have your chromes this is the cracked with P to bring it m back I actually really like the crackled one yeah the most the
Most expensive option oh is it yeah nice job and then on to our main water closet so then you got some classic just two options of chrome this one I actually have a little present for you
Cuz I was at restore they are $150 each look at so I just said why not grab them and that’s it you just solve the problem if if that’s your solution I think it should be you going to be
Submitting an expense report for this no I can eat the $3 $3 that’s insane that’s awesome sold and I think they’re really cute I’m in well done thank you I’ve never actually had a presentation come
With the solution well when the solution’s that affordable I think I will use that I mean I think I’m just going to go with it yeah that was all good nice jobet thank you thanks thank you so much
For having me yeah it was awesome I’m really glad you came too I was like I was impressed by you you know you’re you have good communication and you’re a good successful business person I can tell and
I think like what I would say to my boys who like oh YouTuber that’s so cool it’s like it’s not just like making videos yeah it’s just that running a business like you just mine very public and
Online media but yeah absolutely thank you card oh my gosh thank which is made from a duplicate of wallpaper that I found in addition to our shared values of sustainability and women empowerment I just relate to Liz so much as a business owner we’re both entrepreneurs have teams and
Responsibilities and bottom lines to worry about but overall I’m just so grateful that Liz and her clients and her team brought us in as an intern so that we could all get a behind the scenes look
At the world of interior design thank you guys so much for watching and if you want to see me take on inter turning again let me know which career path I should try out [Music] next here’s what
You can watch next on the story girls so I’ve recently discovered something that has me even more excited than thrifting stooping St stooping I really had no clue how well my stooping bait would work and it’s really just so heartwarming to see so many people excited about the pieces that they
Found through the stooping Toronto Instagram account it’s proof that this really does work

Great job on presenting a more representative picture of interior design. It is quite different than DIY. You are always shifting gears between tons of details, and you have to document and present everything. To the $3 knob find, add travel time, the number of hours it took to do the presentation, plus however many rounds of internal and client review, and you easily have $600 cost of those knobs to the client. And it takes 1 week instead of 3 hours. Labor of love for sure.
Definitely try to work with an architect. I think you would love it.
This made me smile so hard I hope you know everyone is so proud of you both
Hello Sorry Girls! I love your videos and am an aspiring YouTuber with similar interests to yours. I’d love to know what cameras you use to film yourself? I have a dslr and the widest angle lens I have is an 18mm, which is impossible to film yourself while carrying the camera 😂 Love to hear your equipment recommendations! Thank you!
all my people in the background doing the work 💪💪
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Lived vicariously. Thank you!💕
I really enjoyed this video and the concept behind it. It opens up a lot more conversation and ideas for the channel. BUT as an Interior Architect/Designer myself, there is a lot of misconception about what we do or what we can do. I do a lot more than just "colouring". This is also an ongoing conversation with National Councils (especially the South African Council for the Architectural Profession) to get Interior Architects accredited.
"Interesting breakfast, but whatever makes you happy"
ICONIC
Such a great idea!!! Please visit more interior design companies 😍
this makes me want to take a career risk
Loved this, Kelsey! I’d love for you to do this in Toronto, too. Also, what about working with Habitat for Humanity to see how they choose selections for their builds?
The reality of interior design is it’s a lot less time spent picking out pretty things and a whole lot of computer work (drawing plans, powerpoints, install plans, project management, emails) and meetings. Choosing materials and furniture and rugs is a very small snippet of it all. In commercial design we often do not even do the art or rugs or accessories.
Loved Liz MacPhail's nurturing, peaceful and kind energy!
This is such an inspiring video! Makes me wanna try a career path in interior design too. Loooove to see more like this!
I'm a college admission counselor – an an interning series would be HUGE for people finding their passions!! Would love to see more & share with the folks I work with! 💕
Why not take a course on interiror design? That's what I always say all DIY Youtubers are missing, formal training to compliment their hands-on training. Good for you for taking the chance! Keep going!
Incredible @kelsey !!!!
I’m so happy for you! Also low key I can see Kelsey sorting out all the materials and label everything ❤
Why not in Toronto?
As a plebian, even I had heard of Liz MacPhail – she's kind of a big deal. So congrats to Kelsey for landing a really useful internship. It was interesting to watch.
Umm. So definitely go to OCAD and do a design degree lol 😂 and have a sorry girls interior design company
Follow your heart Kelsey, we believe in you!
Do a Christmas thift disney bound character dinner challenge
So I work in film decor and I think it could be sooooo fun for you (since you like film & decorating) to find an internship in this industry 🤩 it ads another dimension to decorating since you don’t always have to make a space livable, there’s so many other factors to take into account and I think it could be so fun to explore this on your channel 🔥
It’s hard nowadays to find a YouTube video that’s so inspiring yet so relatable, definitely worth watching,
open to the concept of this video, hope to see more of it.
